Artificial intelligence has a heat problem. Racks running AI training workloads generate power densities that air cooling cannot economically handle, which is why liquid cooling has moved from niche to mainstream in three years. Doing it in the tropics is harder, and Singapore has just published the first standard addressing that specifically.
What was launched
SS 726:2026, Liquid Cooling in Tropical Data Centres, was developed by the Infocomm Media Development Authority and Enterprise Singapore through the Singapore Standards Council, in consultation with industry, and launched in late August 2026. It is described as the world’s first liquid cooling standard written for tropical conditions.
The scope covers the full lifecycle: planning, design, deployment, operation, maintenance and risk management of liquid-cooled systems. Industry estimates cited by the agencies put the reduction in cooling-related energy consumption above 30 per cent compared with conventional air cooling.
Why the tropics are different
Temperate-climate liquid cooling guidance assumes ambient conditions Singapore does not have. High year-round humidity and sustained heat introduce failure modes that matter: condensation management around cold plates and coolant distribution units, and equipment corrosion that degrades both efficiency and reliability over time.
The standard complements IMDA’s Green Data Centre Roadmap and sits alongside Singapore’s existing Tropical Data Centre standard and its standard on energy efficiency of data centre IT equipment. That is the strategic logic: a country with limited land, limited power and no cool ambient air is assembling a body of technical guidance that turns its constraints into exportable expertise.
How this will be used
Standards of this kind rarely stay voluntary in effect for long.
In procurement, a national standard becomes the reference point in tender documents and colocation agreements almost immediately. Operators bidding for Singapore capacity should expect to be asked whether their designs conform.
In planning, it gives regulators something concrete to measure. Singapore allocates data centre capacity selectively and treats sustainability performance as a criterion, which has until now been assessed against fairly general expectations.
The regional effect may matter most. Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines are absorbing the data centre demand Singapore cannot host, under the same climatic conditions, and a tropical standard with no competitor tends to get adopted or adapted well beyond the jurisdiction that wrote it.
For enterprise buyers of cloud and colocation services with sustainability reporting obligations, the standard also supplies a defensible efficiency benchmark, useful when explaining to a board or an auditor why one facility was chosen over another.
